We met on a bus, going to a war, but we didn't really know, if the war was going to show. So they took us to place, they said that we could play; then they took all of our clothes away, we never did get a chance to play and the gave some things they called, "Government Issue."
Well, we walked and marched and ran and swam, some of the guys started saying words like ****, well I know you know, what I meant to say.
Still it seemed our fearless leaders couldn't get enough and so we had to get up early and start doing that stuff all over again the very next day. Sometimes they cried, yelled, cursed and screamed; and so many of us just barely eighteen; so we had a little trouble trying to a-just. But the DI promised he would be our Ma and we knew the Commander in Chief was surely our Pa. With that thought, we took heart and tried real hard to play the part of a uniformed man in Uncle Sams Mil-i-tar-ee.
We tried real hard to try and do good, but when we stopped marchin and started rollin in the mud, I tell you, I'd just bout had it bud! Then they'd start that yellin all over again. I guess they musta thought that we weren't men. So the next day we got an M-16 and started shootin some rounds and learning how to kill another human being. 0600 we were up and at it. 2200, we were glued to the mattress. Till day after day I could do it all in my sleep
After eight weeks it was "All Clear!" We knew we was gonna be shippin outta here. Gonna go home and give our girls some love. But many of us never made it there. Because it turned out that war was real and we ended up scattered all over the world. Some died in the sand, some in the mud, some in deserts and monsoon floods; and some just drifted away in their minds to parts unknown. Some were bombed, shot and maimed; blamed for things they'd never done nor seen and I began to think maybe it was all just a pitiful waste.
People don't think I've got a right to my views, But I've been there; others I know too. So if you have any real questions, just ask a VET. A real vet knows what it's like to cry, others to bleed and I guarantee Arlington is full of those that knew how to die, with dignity.
Personally, I don't like war. Wish we didn't have em anymore. But it seems that's the way its gonna be. As long as the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, there will always be a clash of swords, that always been just part of His-tor-ee.
Wish we could all just love our fellow man, but I don't guess we never can. So it looks like there will be no end...till the last man is down.
